I’m currently working on a larger 9 tile panel (60 x 60 cm) as a part of my çini education and learning. The brief is to design my own piece that incorporates both hatayi and penç forms emerging from some type of vase or pot. Of course, the infamous leaf designs that took me months to learn and master will also feature. Here’s hoping I can remember all I’ve learnt and put it into practice… It’s been months of changing and reworking my design, but I’ve finally finished an example tile from the full panel for firing. If the colours on that work well then I’ll go ahead to print and paint the final panel. It seems that every time I look at it I see something else to change or alter… But we’ll get there. Eventually.
This will be the first time I have tried a more traditional shading and painting approach in my work, with the vase requiring more traditional relief painting. I’m intrigued to see how it will come out. Main photo is my example tile pre-firing.
