So you may recall that penç (“pench”) forms are a view of the flower looking down from the top (literally a bird’s eye view), or a horizontal cross section of the flower. Hatayi forms are similarly a cross section but taken vertically down the centre, not horizontally. These forms are varied and widespread throughout the artform (like penç) and are similar to the gonca gül (rose bud) form that is usually also drawn from a side on perspective (above picture shows a gonca gül I drew for a panel I am working on at the moment).
Next time you see İznik çinisi, see if you can spot the forms in the artwork…!
